How To Use Your Derma Roller At HomeIt’s time to set the record straight and debunk a lot of the myths and claims  online about derma rolling. The sad truth is, most brands that sell rollers are only interested in profits, not principles. They have no idea about the technicalities of micro needling or what is, and isn’t safe. Keep reading and we will debunk the myths so that you can safely and confidently roll from the comfort of your couch! We have been selling rollers for over 18 years….so we know a thing or two!

Myth No. 1: Derma rolling or micro needling should be left to professionals

We believe that often the opposite is true for several reasons. Firstly, skin needling is a quick and relatively simple treatment which can be carried out at home, safely. Secondly, beauty salons and clinics usually offer a set of 3 micro needling treatments using longer needles which is:

  1. Very expensive,
  2. Painful,
  3. Not an effective long-term treatment and is not often repeated or maintained,
  4. Ongoing treatments require planning, salon visits and are time consuming.

In our experience, skin-needling rollers should be used often and in small doses for roughly 2-3 months before real improvements can be seen. Ongoing top-up treatments are recommended once a month for optimal, long-term results, making at-home derma rolling a no-brainer. Roll anytime, whether you’re at home, away for work or on holiday, a derma roller is a tool that you can take anywhere with you.

We only recommend salon treatments for needles longer than 1.5mm. The reason being, these CIT treatments reach deeper levels of your skin, cause bleeding and redness/ inflammation. They also require the use of a topical anesthetic as the procedure is quite painful! Although it may be very tempting to buy a derma roller online that is 1.5mm, because it is cheap, it in fact is counter productive. This is because you will find inflicting pain and discomfort on yourself so unpleasant, that you will likely throw the roller into your bathroom drawer and never use it again!

Myth No. 2: Derma rolling is painful

Pain levels are subjective, since naturally some people are more physically sensitive than others. But the truth is over time many people find the sensation to be comfortable especially with the derma roller 0.3mm , 0.5mm derma rollers. For the first couple of uses you may notice a tingling sensation. This will be more obvious around areas like your forehead or crows feet. The reason is these areas have thinner skin, less fat and are closer to facial bones. Areas like cheeks etc are usually more comfortable to roll. After a few uses you will barely notice any discomfort at all. Remember though, as soon as needles begin to feel blunt it is time to get a new one!

Myth No. 3: Derma rolling won’t work if you don’t use topical products such as Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid

Derma Rolling on its own works wonders in triggering collagen production, tightening the skin and repairing lines and wrinkles if you use needles .5mm or longer.

Topical products help to supercharge your results. It is optional but recommended. For needle lengths of .3mm we highly recommend combining rolling with your skincare routine.  Post rolling moisturising is advised – feel free to follow up with your usual skincare products, Vitamin C, Vitamin E or Hyaluronic acid. For highly active products like retinol we recommend you do a test patch first, only roll at night, and only use retinol with a roller a few times a week. Please remember that highly active skincare products may cause extra dryness or flaking as the ingredients are now reaching deeper layers of your skin.

Myth No. 4: All derma rollers are the same.

Huge NO NO! Derma roller quality depends on the type of materials used in the production process.

Generic derma rollers are often made in an unsterile environment using the cheapest possible materials, low grade steel or cheap titanium and flimsy plastic. They are produced in batches of 50000+, not properly sterilized, often not inspected for quality or functionality. These rollers pose a huge risk to your skin and we strongly advise buying derma rollers from only reputable, certified brands and avoiding cheap, mass produced rollers you find on eBay or Amazon. Cost is generally an indication of the quality and you can’t expect a $10 product to be safe, durable and properly made. These fake, imitation rollers will not be FDA or TGA approved as medical devices and are not endorsed or used by doctors. They often use thick teeth or spikes as opposed to real needles. These discs of teeth can tear and damage your skin. We only supply TGA approved rollers with surgical grade stainless steel.

Myth No. 5: Derma rolling is a gimmick and doesn’t work

It most certainly does work and will deliver fantastic results! It is ironically one of the very few real skincare gems that deliver significant improvements naturally. Dermarolling for collagen production and skin rejuvenation is a simple biological process. It relies on your body’s own repair and rejuvenation processes. Just think about it – when you graze your knee, your body heals the injury and you end up with brand new skin in the area. When you dermaroll, you create thousands of microscopic and painless micro injuries which in return repair and rejuvenate your skin in the treated area. There are 100’s of medical research articles relating to the effectiveness of it and it is widely used by skin professionals worldwide.

We have supplied our derma rollers to hospitals in the UK. Doctors have used them to help patients who have suffered significant burns and other skin injuries.
